Wedging green spaces into urban sprawls is a notorious challenge of many garden designers. This city garden was a tricky shape and tricky to access but it was enclosed by lovely rubble stone walls and had a beautiful, endless, borrowed view of mature trees.
With a modest budget we needed to think creatively about the materials. We repurposed concrete fencing gravel boards as contemporary stepped paving planks and set them in gravel. Powder coated steel for the step risers and a simple, unfussy oak pergola adds height while framing the uniquely shaped vista.
Shade-happy plants such as Euphorbia characias, Stipa arundinacea and Erigeron karvinskianus soften the gravel and stone walls.
